Despite what you say, it’s not cheating when you own the website.
alwaysBETA is a community weblog founded by three friends at Olin College of Engineering. We realized we needed an outlet to write about things that interested us but weren’t, say, “suitable” for our own personal blogs. We want to make you laugh, cry, learn, and use web standards. But most of all, we want you to enjoy the experience.
See this recycling container from Paris? Click it. Oh yeah. That’s an experience.
Take a look around - we’ve spent countless days carefully handcrafting the look and feel of the site; we’ve spent countless hours meticulously discussing content, taglines, and what to write about; and I’ve spent countless minutes writing this post trying to sum up the glorious vision we have for alwaysBETA.
Don’t let the XHTML strict compliance scare you. Or the crazy CSS hackery that’s occuring behind the scene. Or Zach. alwaysBETA is about technology, news, avian flu, music, movies - anything and everything. Think BoingBoing with less linkblog and more written content. Think Slashdot with less 1337 Linux hacking and… well, more readable articles.
So welcome and thanks for visiting - we hope this is the start of a wonderful relationship - where we shove content at you, and you hungrily eat it up. Enjoy!
UPDATE: For those of you coming here to see the modified version of Lightbox, Sean has a brand spankin’ new article devoted entirely to the creation and implementation of our version - check it out!

Nice site. Your straightforwardness and good site design begged me to subscribe to your feed. I know college students can create good content, so go for it!

Hey Tristan,
I’ll be writing a post soon about the customization that we did for Lightbox as part of the “Building aB” series. Watch for it in the next week or so.

Ajaxian » Modal Dialog: Lightbox Goes Wild
[…] Brian Shih integrated Scriptaculous effects, which makes it look very Apple-ish. You can check out an example by clicking on the image in this post […]

Bug in Firefox 1.0.7:
Load this page, scroll to the very top, click the image. Close the overlay.
Scroll down a bit, click the image again. Now, the image positioned wrongly (using the Y-Position from the first call, it seems).

Hey Martin,
That’s strange, it doesn’t happen in 1.5. Can anybody else verify? That’d be a bug with the original Lightbox JS (which I didn’t write), not with my modification, but I’d like to fix it if possible…

nice implementation of lightbox and scriptaculous.
/subscribed.

you should add the implementation of hitting ‘x’ or clicking the blackspace to close

I tried to click your logo at the top, to go the homepage, no such luck. Love the JS and CSS, but how about a hyper link

@Tom: The logo is clickable now! Everyone rejoice!
@Sudar: Well now, the whole Wordpress theme is a little bit of a trade secret, now isn’t it? However, I will continue to write posts with the “Building aB” prefix that cover some of the main points of how we got our theme to work its mojo. Stay tuned. Also, I’d eventually like to create and release a publicly-available Wordpress theme that uses some of the things I’ve learned while making this.

Beautiful website! I love the minimalist design that puts all the most important information where you’d expect it. Great job! (I just might steal a few ideas from you)
